Road Safety gets the Spotlight at the UN General Assembly

On April 12th, the UN General Assembly adopted the draft resolution “A/72/L.48,” titled “Improving global road safety,” after dozens of state representatives from developed and developing countries took to the podium to denounce the dire and unacceptable social and economic toll that road traffic deaths and injuries incurred in their countries, particularly in low and middle-income countries, where 90 percent of these deaths and injuries occur.

The resolution was further strengthened with the launch ceremony of the much-anticipated United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund, where World Bank Transport & Digital Development Senior Director, Jose Luis Irigoyen, delivered welcoming remarks and FIA Foundation’s Executive Director, Saul Billingsley, and others called on the UN and the GRSF to work together towards achieving the road safety-related Sustainable Development Goals.

These agreements were followed by the 25th Meeting of the UN Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) held on April 12-13th at the UN headquarters in NYC, where GRSF, UN Special Envoy, Jean Todt, and representatives from UN agencies, NGOs, academia and the private sector were convened to discuss the implementation of the UNGA resolution, the launch of the Road Safety Fund, UNRSC activities and membership requests. Noteworthy decisions include the membership acceptance of one of GRSF donors, the International Motor Vehicle Inspection Committee (CITA) to UNRSC, as well as the Government of Sweden’s acceptance to host the Third High-Level Global Conference on Road Safety in 2020, and WHO and the UN regional commissions’ invitation to facilitate the organization of the Fifth UN Global Road Safety Week in 2019.
