Overview
Implementing Road Safety Engineering Measures in Ho Chi Minh City
The GRSF, as part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) 2015-2019, aimed to leverage road safety in World Bank-financed projects by capturing synergies from BIGRS-funded technical assistance and training activities across ten cities under the program. Support from GRSF included over the 5-year period:
-
evaluation of road infrastructure at the network level for safety
-
guidance on investment options for safer designs
-
enhanced road safety management capacity to relevant institutions
In Ho Chi Minh City, the BIGRS has supported under the Ho Chi Minh City Green Transport Development:
-
308 km roads surveyed and assessed
-
77 km roads where designs, scenarios or implementation have been star rated
-
16 km construction completed based on iRAP survey recommendations
-
2,198+ potential deaths and serious injuries to be prevented over 20 years
The iRAP assessments at network level predicted a 42% reduction in fatalities and serious injuries compared to the existing situation if all recommendations were to be implemented. Using municipality budget, and based on iRAP and BIGRS partners recommendations, the local administration has implemented in 2018 and 2019 over 300 road safety engineering measures across the city, such as:
-
157 refuge islands
-
11 raised pedestrian crossings
-
8 footbridges
-
11 bus stops
