1.35 million people are killed each year globally on the roads. Additionally, approximately 50 million are injured, many of them seriously. These staggering numbers of road crash deaths and serious injuries, which represent the leading cause of death for children and young adults globally, are intensified by the loss to families, friends, and societies. 

To remember those that are no longer with us or those who were severely injured in a road crash, for over 20 years the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year. This year, WDR 2021 puts the spotlight on the reduction of traffic speeds, which have the potential to prevent many deaths and serious injuries, in particular those of pedestrians and all other vulnerable road users including children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

Join the World Bank’s Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) for a webinar to commemorate those who suffered from road crashes. This event will bring together voices from all around the world sharing their experiences and their thoughts on how the road safety silent pandemic can be stopped.

To honor all roads' victims, during WDoR 2021 GRSF aims to bring forward impactful knowledge, stories, and evidence-based road safety guidance, as in publications and tools that may contribute to mitigating this crisis. 

In Nigeria, we have the legal framework but the personnel: Police, Judges and other Government organs are ill-informed, poorly funded and managed. Credible NGOs will manage crash victims’ issues better. Insurance is very poor. Funding is very vital.

The impact of road trauma is devastating, both for those who survive with severe injuries and as family members of victims who are faced with a reality that upsets the existential parameters and affects the meaning of the continuity of life: we must activate a cultural evolution in the society, which puts the values of respect for life, solidarity and not vehicles or other interests in the first place. Filippo Randi.
