The World Bank Highlights a Decade of Road Safety Results

The World Bank recently published a Results Brief showcasing its road safety achievements. Titled “A Decade of Saving Lives Through Road Safety Investments”, the brief highlights the concrete results of the World Bank’s various road safety engagements across the globe over the past 10 years, most of which were catalyzed or informed by the Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF).

Some of the key results mentioned in the brief include providing 65 million people with access to safer roads between mid-2018 and mid-2023 (equivalent to the entire population of the United Kingdom or South Africa); 10,000 kilometers of roads rehabilitated, rebuilt, and rendered safer via GRSF-funded road safety assessments between 2010 and 2019; and thousands of fatalities and serious injuries prevented through various investment projects.

“Road crashes are not only a human tragedy and a major public health issue, but also impose high socioeconomic costs, especially on the poor. Yet meaningful progress on this vexing issue can be made. This Results Brief highlights the tangible outcomes that can be achieved through well-informed World Bank investments. The next step is to scale up financing so more lives can be saved,” said Said Dahdah, Head of GRSF and Global Lead for Road Safety at the World Bank.
